WELCOME TO ELM TREE CLASS
Teacher: Mrs Parkin
Hello and welcome to our Elm Tree Class. There will be lots of photographs and information here to keep you in touch with what we’ve been up to in our class, so please remember to take a look every now and then.
We will be enjoying all sorts of learning indoors and outdoors, as well as fun things and adventures, this will be a great way to share them with your family and friends.
If you have any feedback about our page, it would be good to hear from you.
Please ensure your child has a PE bag in school with indoor and outdoor clothing if possible. Please also remember to bring in a water bottle with your child's name on it every day.
Your child should have their book bag with their reading book and reading diary in school every day. This is so a record can be kept to show your child's improvement in their reading when they have read individually or in a group at school. Reading books will be collected on a Thursday and two new books will be given out on Friday for reading until the following week.
If you read with your child please complete their reading diary as rewards are given to children who read regularly at home, through our class hot air balloon chart. PE takes place every Thursday and one other afternoon during the week.
Homework and Spellings
Homework and a phonics activity will be given out on a Monday. Children will no longer be tested on spellings as on-going assessments in phonics lesson shows where sounds need revisiting and there are used to inform planning, rather than spelling test results that don't always show a true picture of children's understanding of using phonics to spell. there will be suggested activities and games you can do with your children to practice reading and spelling using the sound for that week. Homework will be collected on a Friday and marked ready for the following Monday. Homework will be based on your child's learning that week and should, therefore, allow mostly independent completion. Homework activities are not compulsive but do help to consolidate children's learning further. Additionally homework will give you an idea of what we are learning in class. Please do not hesitate to ask if you are unsure of anything linked to homework or phonics.
Spring term 1 Topic
Our Topic this half term is Towers, Tunnels and Turrets!
This term, we are very excited to be visiting a real castle to explore the towers, battlements and maybe a secret tunnel or two! We will learn all about the different parts of a castle and describe how they have changed over time. Using a wide range of materials, we will build models of castles and test the strength of our structures. We will learn the stories of Rapunzel, The Three Little Pigs, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and create models inspired by them. Maps and photographs will help us to learn about the tallest buildings and the longest tunnels in the world. We'll find out about the amazing Victorian engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and improve our PE skills by playing attacking and defending games.
